A shallow horseshoe bay with water calm enough to walk out into.
Pasikudah has the calmest bay in Sri Lanka, a shallow horseshoe of white sand on the east coast. Its season is April to September, opposite the south, so it suits a summer wedding. Venues run from the largest beach resort on the coast, which has a ballroom, down to boutique pavilions and glamping on Kalkudah beach.
April to September, with May to August the best of it. That is opposite the south coast, so it works when the rest of the island is wet, and it suits mid year travel. Avoid October to January.
About 5.5 to 6 hours from Colombo by road, or an hour by domestic flight to Batticaloa with a 45 minute transfer. From Sigiriya it is 2.5 hours, so it pairs easily with the Cultural Triangle.
Amaya Beach has the ballroom, seating 175, with 125 rooms. Uga Bay and Sun Siyam are the luxury options, Maalu Maalu is built like a fishing village, and Karpaha Sands does glamping on empty Kalkudah beach.
Amaya Beach is the only venue for over 100, with a 175 seat ballroom. Sunrise and Uga Bay handle medium sized groups, and the rest suit 20 to 60. Properties along the bay are 15 minutes apart, so guests can spread out.
Same season, different strengths. Pasikudah has the better beach, a shallow turquoise bay that photographs like nowhere else. Trincomalee has more variety in venues and more for guests to do. Pick Pasikudah if the beach is the point.
Not much to do, which is the appeal. Swimming in the calmest water on the island, seafood, and spa treatments. Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya are close enough to add a couple of days of ruins.
