  • Heritance Kandalama (Dambulla (12 km from town, shores of Kandalama Reservoir)). Bawa's cliff face building, set into 211 acres of forest with its vine covered front running nearly a kilometre along Kandalama Reservoir, Sigiriya Rock on the horizon. 152 rooms, three pools, a Six Senses spa. They also do cave dinners.
  • Jetwing Vil Uyana (Sigiriya (private wetland reserve, 10 minutes from the rock)). A man made wetland built in 2006 from abandoned paddy, now a private reserve. 36 thatched dwellings on stilts across five habitats, over lily covered lakes. Suits small boutique ceremonies rather than large receptions.
  • Uga Ulagalla (Thirappane (between Anuradhapura and Sigiriya)). A colonial mansion on 58 acres of paddy, orchard and forest between two ancient reservoirs. 25 pool villas, each 1,850 sq ft. Weddings up to 50, and there is a helipad. The Kamatha dinner is served out in the fields under lanterns.
  • Cinnamon Lodge Habarana (Habarana (lakeside)). The largest resort in the region, 27 acres of wooded garden beside Habarana Lake, with 137 chalet rooms. Three restaurants, a butterfly garden and a lamp lit jetty. Sigiriya and Dambulla are 30 minutes, Minneriya 25.

What is the best time of year for a wedding in the Cultural Triangle?

January to April is driest, and September is a second good window. The region sits in the dry zone, so it works for more of the year than the coasts. Avoid November to early December, when the inter monsoon arrives.

How do guests get to the Cultural Triangle?

Four to five hours from Colombo and the airport by road, or 2.5 hours from Kandy. Uga Ulagalla has a helipad if you want a faster arrival. Most hotels arrange group transport for wedding parties.

Should we base ourselves in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana?

All three are within 30 minutes of each other, so guests can stay anywhere. Sigiriya is closest to the rock, Dambulla has the cave temples and Heritance Kandalama, and Habarana has the biggest resorts and the shortest run to Minneriya.
